Many of modern prescription drugs have very dangerous side effects. That’s why a lot of people choose alternative ways to treat insomnia. Many scientists consider aromatherapy to be effective in insomnia treatment.

Essential oils for insomnia treatment have been known for more than 6 thousands years. They are obtained from the different parts of plants (their leaves, flowers, stems etc). Essential oils are also used in perfumes and flavorings production along with aromatherapy. The technique of essential oils obtaining is called “steam distillation”. Steam from water goes through the plant parts and   forces its essential oils to fume. Vaporized essential oils are condensed and gathered after this procedure.

Researches showed that essential oils ingredients have an impact on central nervous system. They work as depressants. Essential oils are made from more than 100 plants nowadays.

A person starts to feel more tranquil and less apprehensive; he or she falls asleep faster and easier than usual. Essential oils diminish the transmission of nerve impulses through the spine, the brain, and other organs.

There are different ways of applying essential oils. They are: inhalations, skin massages and baths with essential oils. One of the fastest ways is to put a couple of essential oils drops to a piece of clean textile (it can be simple handkerchief) and then to breathe in reeks of oils. Another way to use essential oils is to make a blend of different essential oil and vegetable oil (e.g. sunflower oil) and put it to the skin. The proportion for such mixture should be: 10 drops of essential oil and 25 milliliters of vegetable oil. You can add a small amount of essential oil to a bath with warm water.

There was no wide researching on essential effect study. But a couple of studies among patients who had dementia were held in the 1990s. They showed that using of essential oils (especially lavender oil) is effective in fighting with sleep disorders.

Essential oils are safe for the majority of people. But still you have to be careful since a small number of people can be allergic to some or a couple of essential oils.  Skin eruption, eyes or mouth inflammation are the symptoms of the allergy. So, don’t abuse essential oil usage and always dilute it with vegetable oil.
