Natural Remedies

Melatonin is now commonly taken for insomnia but its real effects are still uncertain. Some researchers maintain that melatonin contributes to better falling asleep, but it has no effect on total sleep time or daytime feeling of fatigue or sleepiness. Numerous studies on its effects in special groups have informed of the following:

melatonin_for_insomnia- Elderly people. It seems to help some older people with insomnia. Although all elderly people experience a drop in melatonin levels, melatonin supplements do not appear to make people sleepy who do not already suffer from insomnia.
- Shift-workers. It has been proved that 1 mg of melatonin for personnel who worked night shifts was no more effective than placebo in improving sleep quality.
- Travelers and jet lag. The researches of benefits of melatonin for jet lag and travelers are mixed. It is unclear if certain dosages may be wholesome while others are not.
- Blind people. Some studies reported that melatonin can help people that have signs of blindness retrain their circadian cycle so that they can sleep at regular hours. However, the best dosages and timing need to be elucidated.
- People that left off other sleeping pills. One study suggested that melatonin might help people withdraw from sleeping pills.
- Delayed sleep syndrome. One study indicated that it might be slightly helpful for people with delayed sleep phase syndrome.

There is still one difficulty in assessing study result. There are no firm standards on melatonin dosages or when it should be taken. You have to take to your consideration that the use of high doses of melatonin causes following side effects:

- Somnolence
- Mental impairment
- Persistent headaches
- Terrible nightmares
- Neurological disorders in children
- Interactions with other drugs are not quite known.

It should be mentioned that melatonin is now classified as a dietary supplement and not as a drug. That’s why its quality and effectiveness is out of control in the US. By the way, the United State is the only nation that does not control this agent. Melatonin is a mighty hormone that can lead to serious effects on all parts of the body. Moreover, many of them are still unknown.
