Insomnia During Pregnancy

pregnancy_insomniaInsomnia in pregnant women is quite common, especially during the later months. It could be caused by various reasons including difficulties in finding comfortable position to fall asleep, the need to go to the toilet because of the increased pressure of your uterus on the bladder, baby kicking, vivid dreams, heartburn, back pain or aching in the hips etc.

Additionally this can be a time of high anxiety. You don’t know what to expect concerning labor and delivery. Will your baby be healthy when he is born? How will you manage the pain? Will you be able to look after the baby? Do you have everything necessary?

During a busy workday you may not have time to think about future parenthood and how it will change you life.  At night, when things are quiet, your mind is overcrowded with such thoughts. You may feel depressed and anxious about all these things that can interfere with your ability to fall asleep.

One study reported that about 88% of pregnant women recounted that the sleep was altered from their usual experience. Sleep quality and duration, and insomnia were worst during the first trimester. Sleep normalized in the second trimester. However, the third trimester was distinguished by increased insomnia and reduced daytime alertness.

As a rule, the third trimester is the most disturbing in the pregnancy. It happens so because of anxiety, discomfort, partner anxiety and doubts. The adaptation to the unexpected nature of pregnancy and labor is very delicate thing and requires great stamina and understanding of self and others.
